In my short time as a teacher, I have trained my bladder to make it through a whole day if I need to, which I often do. Monday afternoon was no exception. As usual, I found myself dancing around in my classroom at 5:40, trying to finish one last thing before I let myself go. Finally, I made a mad dash down the hall, and unbuttoning my pants, ran in (there aren’t many people on campus that...

On the way home tonight, I was thinking about Alex’s upcoming move to Dallas, and Glenn’s relocation to either Japan or Atlanta in the next year, and it suddenly occurred to me that while neither of the moves are necessarily permanent, it might be the last time all five of us live in the same city. I feel like I have taken these past few years for granted, and I don’t want them...

Another dream for the files...
Preface: Whatever channel we usually fall asleep to switches to televangelists in the morning, so often, their sermons will work their way into my dreams. Disclaimer: I have no idea what my deal is with boy bands lately. The only boy band I’ve ever really liked has been New Kids on the Block. Dream: I was in Sam’s Club (like Costco) shopping for something, when all of a sudden, a...

Weird dream again!
Justin Timberlake was walking through an office where I was working singing the NSync hit, “Merry Christmas.” I told him that I had just been listening to that in my car, and that I loved it. Then, I launched into my spiel about how in general, I am not a fan of bridges in songs, but added that I thought that song had a successful bridge. Then, he asked me if I knew any songs that...

Operation DCCB - Day 1 - End of Day Report
Thanks for the likes and comments! Diet coke with splenda = nasty A small fraction of why I am cutting back on DC is to save $, so I don’t want to get something fancy from whole foods that Wes and I would both get addicted to, but thanks for the suggestion! I’m not at a point in my life where I can cut the caffeine, but it’s a goal. I am probably going to try and get pregnant...

Operation Diet Coke Cutback - day 1
Between the Dunkin Donuts coffee, the peppermint mocha coffeemate, and the beautiful teal to-go mug I got yesterday, this should be easy. We’ll see! The coffee pot is supposed to start brewing in ten minutes. Note to self: set it for 6:15 tomorrow. I’d like to get down to one or fewer DCs a day. Right now I’m at 3 (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). I need the caffeine,...

Sometimes, my students are such ungrateful jerks that I don’t want to do anything nice for them. Other times, I get inspired.  I just spent an hour creating a super-awesome Math textbook scavenger hunt for them to do with the sub while I am out Friday. Hopefully, they realize that I could have just left them a bunch of bookwork without any flair, but I doubt most of them will see it that...

How Finland Became an Educational Leader →
petitchou: How did Finland manage to elevate the role of teacher in the eyes of the population to something that is not just an honorable profession, but a revered profession, whereas in the United States, teachers are so regularly denigrated? They really think about teachers as scientists and the classrooms are their laboratories. So, as I mentioned — every teacher has to have a masters...

It was chilly at the beach this morning, so we brought the kids to Adventure Island for some expensive fun. Thanks to Uncle Butchie, they all got to stand in the hurricane machine.

What's the rule?
Yesterday, during my lesson on patterns and input output tables, I showed the students patterns and asked if they could figure out the rule. Anyway, one of my students who has an outburst problem and the attention span of a fly stands up and shouts, “BE RESPECTFUL!” Hilarious.

I think I've finally realized my dream...
I want to either: 1. Own/run a summer camp. 2. Own/run a Kellerman’s style old fashioned family mountain resort. Now I’ve said it. I have to make it happen. There’s a backstory to this, but I’ll have to post it later!

Dice?
Did you know that we have to call dice “number cubes” now because the word dice apparently promotes gambling? I got a stern look from our Instructional Specialist today because I said “dice” in front of the kids. Crazy town!

Thoughts on the first 3 days of school...
I have a good feeling about this year. I am still pretty nervous, because I have more than twice as many kids in my class this year as I did last year (13 vs 29), and because I am teaching at a high-stakes testing grade level. However, for the most part, I have a class full of great kids who seem enthusiastic about school (and homework!) and ready to learn. I got an idea from my mentor that...

Mini beach trip with the Fitchs!
hebertbabies: We took a quick weekend trip to Gulfport, MS with Lis, Scott, and the kids. We wanted to go to the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, which is an excellent Children’s Museum, and the beach was an added bonus. I was skeptical, because I am kind of a snob for Destin-area sands and water, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fun shallow water and sandbars can bring (even if the water is...

Conversations with Kids (vacation edition)
[Madelyn and Vera walk into the room as I am changing into my swimsuit] Madelyn: Sydney, why are your boobies so tiny? Why don’t you have big boobies? Me: [thinking that I’ve wondered the same all my life, but I want to be a positive role model, so I say:] I don’t know, Madelyn. That’s just how God made me. You have to be tough to hang with the kids in my family…

tesslynch: As I was eating an entire burrito over the course of five minutes, the Yoplait commercial came on. You know, the Yoplait commercial where the woman is on the phone with her friend talking about her diet (“Hey, how’s your diet going? Vera's Second Trip to Austin
hebertbabies: Vera and I had a wonderful trip to Austin to visit Aunt Courtney, Uncle Ben, and McCullough. Here are some fun pics! Vera’s first trip to Costco. Haha. Here are the girls playing in the backyard the afternoon we got there. Court and Ben belong to a great club with an AMAZING baby pool. Here’s the view from the deck! It even had a little splash pad. > The squirt! ...

Hebert babies (well, just baby): 4th of July... →
hebertbabies: As usual I am WAY late on this (and as usual, I am starting out a post with an apology), but here are some highlights from our annual family 4th of July party. I repeated the balloon garland that we did for Vera’s birthday party last year. I think it adds a fun sense of occasion!

Our flight from Dallas to Austin was delayed by 30 minutes today because a man threw up in the back. Apparently on people, because 3 people had to get off the plane. The A/C was also broken. On a summer day in Texas! It didn’t cool down until the last 15 minutes of the flight. Poor Vera was beet red and soaked with sweat. She was great though!

Does anyone know where I could get a fun dress-up costume trunk for Vera that isn’t all girly and/or princess? I know I can get individual costumes, but they are like $25 and up a piece and that seems pricey. I was thinking that someone had to make a unisex costume trunk that had lots of options inside. I just don’t want Vera to think that the only think you can dress up as is a...
