Jazz Fest Food!

This Saturday at Jazz Fest, in addition to lots of other food, I had two things that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

  1. Crawfish Strudel from Coffee Cottage.  This was basically filo dough stuffed with a cross between crawfish etouffee and crawfish stew in the center, with fun little strudel slits at the top.  Absolutely delicious!  You can order them online!!!
  2. A praline shoe sole from Loretta’s.  When I was a kid, we got shoe soles (also called elephant ears) from Dimm’s Bakery in Donaldsonville, and they were fantastic, but Dimm’s closed (to pursue their wedding video business - MISTAKE!). Shoe soles are definitely my favorite pastry, but they are hard to find.  One Albertson’s in BR sells them (under the name crispies) and they are ok.  Cake Palace also has them, but theirs are gross.  The key is to find the perfect consistency - not too crispy, but not too soft, and not to over or under-sweeten.  I realize these are ambiguous criteria, but Loretta’s was dead on!  I stopped to get a praline, because I needed dessert after the salt-fest I just had (jambalaya, crawfish strudel, boudin balls, cracklin) and right before asking for one, I saw the box of shoe soles and almost screamed, “I want that!”  In retrospect, I should have bought more than one, but I didn’t know they’d be so delicious.  The good news is, you can order them online!!

I will write more about Jazz Fest and nudawn’s visit later, but I had to share these links with the world.  Yum!

P.S.  The cracklin was as delicious as Mills said it was.
